A New Chapter for Our Tanzania Avocado Business

A New Chapter for Our Tanzania Avocado Business

14th October 2026

Our Tanzania operation has entered a new chapter with the official commissioning of its avocado packhouse in Viwenge, near Iringa on the highway linking Southern Africa to the ports of Dar es Salaam and Mombasa.

The facility will handle the sorting, grading, and packing of fruit from our newly established orchards at Mgagao Estates, providing the infrastructure to take avocados seamlessly from harvest to market.

Built as the first stage of a larger development, the packhouse is designed for growth. The main building, currently 36 metres long, will extend to 100 metres as production expands. Two cold rooms are already in place, with capacity to scale to more than ten in line with harvesting needs.

Mgagao, located near the Udzungwa Mountains, offers an ideal environment for avocado cultivation. Sustainability is central to our approach: the farm was chosen for its abundant streams, all originating within the estate’s catchments. A one‑million‑cubic‑metre dam, now nearing completion, will secure water supply during the dry season. Orchard operations have already achieved Global GAP accreditation, with further sustainability certifications expected next year.

This milestone reflects more than bricks and mortar. It marks the progress of a journey that began with a feasibility study in April 2018. Planting commenced in the midst of the Covid‑19 pandemic, and today—despite those challenges—we can proudly say we have reached the end of the beginning.
